There’s exciting news out of Tasmania this week: the state government has announced it will expand free access to early childhood education and care!

This expansion falls under the Working Together program, which offers free education and care for children in the year before Kindergarten, plus support for families. Currently 19 services deliver this program. This will soon be expanded to more centres and areas across the state.

We welcome this announcement which means that more children in Tasmania will have access to free early childhood education the year before they start school. We know that this helps sets children up to thrive at school.

There’s just one thing. Quality early childhood education and care depends on early childhood educators and teachers. And right now the workforce is in crisis. To deliver on the promise of expanded access to free early education the Tasmanian government must invest in the workforce. Properly paying the people who nurture and educate our children will lead to high quality centres that are available in all areas.

Dear Premier,

Thank you for announcing an expansion of free access to early childhood services. This will make a huge difference in the lives of children, parents and families in Tasmania.

But for children to benefit it is crucial that early childhood educators and teachers are available to work in the expanded services. Right now there is a national shortage of early childhood educators and each and every day more educators are leaving the sector. Without stemming this tide children and families will miss out.

To ensure that an expansion of early childhood services is possible, there needs to be a clear  plan to recruit, retain and support early childhood educators.

Early childhood educators deserve to be paid properly and have the value of their work recognised. That's why I'm writing to ask you to commit to an early childhood education workforce strategy (like this one: thrivebyfive.org.au/workforceplan/) - to ensure there are enough educators and teachers so the expansion can be implemented.

The prospect of children being able to access more free early childhood education and care is fantastic. I urge you to develop and implement a workforce strategy - like this - to ensure it can be delivered.
